year, the Greater Raleigh, Greater Durham, Cary and Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chambers travel to Washington to meet with the regional legislative delegation
and to lobby on issues of regional importance, such as transportation, federal research funding, and education/workforce concerns.
The trip also gives local business and community leaders and elected officials the chance to meet each other and network at social activities, such as
a taping of CNN's Crossfire and a Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees baseball game. The cost of the trip is $475 per person and includes airfare,

Chapel Hill May Increase Commercial Garbage Pickup Fees
The Town Council may increase commercial garbage collection fees by 45 to 50 percent. The Chamber is asking its members to e-mail the Town Council by
clicking here or to call Town Hall at 968-2714 to oppose the increase as an unreasonable burden on the business community that will save residents little
money on their annual tax bills. The Town Council's goal is to increase the current revenues of $256,000 from the collection program by another $100,000.
This proposal has the potential to cost a business using the town garbage collection service an additional $750 a year while saving a residential homeowner
only $5.
For example, a business with an 8yd Dumpster that receives three pickups each week could see its bill go from $979 to $1,426. A business with the same
Dumpster that receives five pickups a week could see its bill increase from $1,705 to $2,483.

Chapel Hill Considers Lobbying Ordinance
The Chapel Hill Town Council is considering an ordinance at its June 14 meeting that would require all lobbyists to register and report their activities.
Under the proposal, a lobbyist is defined as any paid employee who directly contacts Town Council members and Town staff to influence municipal decisions.
While it excludes business owners who have sole proprietorships or own more than 50 percent of their business, it would affect all nonprofit executive
directors and paid staff members.
